The BHHI postdoctoral scholars training program educates the next generation of strategic scientists empowered to address upstream causes of homelessness. Our projects rely on diverse research methodologies including quantitative methods, qualitative methods, or mixed methods and utilize a diverse set of research designs including longitudinal, cross-sectional, quasi-experimental, natural experiments, implementation and translational science, and policy evaluation.

Overview

UCSF BHHI is seeking highly motivated scholars to join a multidisciplinary team for a 2-year postdoctoral program. This full-time position is suitable for graduating doctoral students looking to gain research experience and further career development in either an academic or applied setting. Scholars will work closely with BHHI faculty, including an assigned mentor from within BHHI, to conduct research related to homelessness and translate findings into evidence-based programs and policy solutions. Scholars are based at the UCSF Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital campus in San Francisco and have access to resources across the UCSF campuses.

Qualifications:

  • Hold a doctoral degree (PhD, DrPH, SciD, or equivalent) in epidemiology, health or public health, urban policy, social work, sociology, anthropology, economics, health services research, or a related field (required; must be confirmed before start date)
  • Experienced in Stata, R, or SAS for quantitative analyses and Atlas.ti., Dedoose or Nvivo for qualitative analyses (required)
  • Strong quantitative or qualitative analytical and writing skills (required)
  • Previous experience in social determinants of health, health and/or racial disparities, and populations at risk for or experiencing homelessness (highly desired)
  • Methodological expertise in cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis, qualitative and mixed methods research (highly desired)

"I chose the BHHI postdoc because of its interdisciplinary mentorship opportunities, policy focus, quality research, and additional statistical and implementation science training."

Dallas Augustine, PhD
UCSF BHHI Postdoctoral Scholar

Scholars are expected to conduct statistical and/or qualitative research analysis, publish first-authored manuscripts on projects aligned with the primary research topic, present findings at national conferences, disseminate work with local partners, and prepare grant applications to establish research independence. Scholars will have the opportunity to supplement their training in implementation and dissemination sciences by pursuing coursework through the UCSF Training in Clinical Research Program.

Scholars will also be expected to pursue communication opportunities beyond the peer-reviewed literature such as op-eds, policy briefs, or white papers. Dr. Morgan Philbin serves as the BHHI postdoctoral fellowship director, and scholars will receive primary research mentorship from a rich set of BHHI faculty.
