Joseph Tay Wee Teck, PhD

Joseph Tay Wee Teck (Joe Tay) is a 2023–24 U.K. Harkness Fellow in Health Care Policy and Practice. Joe Tay will be part of the BHHI Postdoctoral Program from August 21, 2023 to July 31, 2024. He has been a general practitioner (family doctor) working with marginalized groups and populations in Edinburgh for over 15 years. During the pandemic, he was part of the Edinburgh inclusion health initiative to provide primary and addiction care to people experiencing homelessness. He also specializes in addiction medicine and is currently the clinical services director for Forward Leeds, the second largest integrated addiction care service in England. He is an honorary research fellow at St Andrews University School of Medicine. As part of St Andrews, he has co-founded with his PhD supervisor, Professor Alex Baldacchino, the digitAS project, which explores role of digital health interventions in addiction services. His research interests include the reproduction of inequalities in digital health interventions, implementation science, telemedicine delivered addiction care, and the use complex and critical systems approaches in addressing wicked problems. He is part of the policy and practice interest group of the International Society of Addiction Medicine and has been an advisor in the Scottish policy context on quality standards for the treatment of opioid use disorder and other substance use related issues. He is currently submitting a series of papers on Telemedicine delivered Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (TMOUD) as part of his doctoral studies and received his MSc in drug and alcohol studies through the University of Glasgow.
