Older adults experiencing chronic homelessness have low rates of advance care planning despite high rates of morbidity and mortality. Researchers explored if rehousing people who experience homelessness into permanent supportive housing (PSH) would present an opportunity to introduce advance care planning (ACP). Researchers identified behavioral determinants related to ACP for formerly chronically homeless adults in PSH.

Margot Kushel, MD, director of the UCSF Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative, is among the panelists discussing how the partnership between UCSF scientists, government officials, advocacy organizations, and media has changed the way older adults experiencing homelessness received support from the City of Oakland. Between 2010 ad 2022, the population of veterans experiencing homelessness has dropped by more than 50%. The long term success in reducing the number of people experiencing homelessness among veterans is the funding to cover the costs and coordinated efforts between the local, state, and federal agencies. Violence against people who lack housing "is astronomically higher than we see in other populations," explains Margot Kushel, MD. "We know from studies that when people obtain housing, no matter what type of housing it is, over the next six months they are at dramatically less risk of experiencing violence."

COVID-19 impacted access to medical care and social services, potentially worsening HIV outcomes among people experiencing homelessness. In San Francisco, Ward 86, initiated POP-UP, a low-barrier, multicomponent model of care to address barriers to care for people living with HIV experiencing homelessness. Researchers found that care engagement and viral suppression did not worsen among the 85 patients enrolled, despite concerns that the COVID-19 pandemic might worsen outcomes. The study suggests that multicomponent interventions may help maintain viral suppression despite unanticipated structural barriers.

In many parts of the world, communities experience water, sanitation, and hygiene (WaSH) insecurity. While WaSH insecurity is prevalent in many low and middle-income countries, it is also a problem in high-income countries, like the United States, as is evident in vulnerable populations, including people experiencing homelessness. This study examined WaSH access among unhoused communities in Los Angeles, California. Researches found that WaSH services for unhoused communities in LA is most difficult at night, however community differences exist.

Half of people experiencing homelessness are older than 50, and almost half of older homeless adults became homeless for the first time after they turned 50. The UCSF Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative (BHHI) recently released a report on the largest representative study of homelessness in the United States since the mid-1990s—the California Statewide Study of People Experiencing Homelessness. BHHI study staff administered nearly 3,200 questionnaires and conducted 365 in-depth interviews with adults experiencing homelessness in California to better understand the characteristics and experiences of adults experiencing homelessness, precipitants of homelessness, barriers and facilitators to regaining housing, and opportunities to better prevent and end homelessness.
