Are you a researcher who wants to include people with lived experience in your research? Are you an organization that wants to authentically involve community members in your program development or evaluation? The UCSF BHHI recently released a report on the largest representative study of homelessness in the United States since the mid-1990s—the California Statewide Study of People Experiencing Homelessness (CASPEH). The CASPEH was guided by a Lived Expertise Advisory Board—a group of advisors from across the state of California who represent a range of lived and living experiences of homelessness. Join Kara Young Ponder, PhD, Lived Expertise Advisory Board Members Michelle Ochoa, Dez Martinez, and Robynne Rose-Haymer as they discuss the nuts and bolts of how they did research together from designing survey questions to helping train field staff, analyzing data and disseminating findings. 

Margot Kushel, MD, director of the Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative, delivered the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies’ 23rd John T. Dunlop Lecture. Dr. Kushel spoke about the impact that homelessness has on an individual’s quality of life, highlighting the lived experiences of unhoused Californians who participated in the California Statewide Study of People Experiencing Homelessness. After the lecture there was a panel, featuring, Boston Healthcare for the Homeless founder, Harvard Medical School professor James J. O’Connell, and Peggy Bailey, a leader of a housing policy research center. JCHS Managing Director Chris Herbert, the moderated the panel. Dr. Kushel said, "While it is really easy to blame people impacted by homelessness, doing so not only is not fair or right, but it also isn’t going to get us any closer to a solution."

Black Californians make up only 7% of the states population, but make up more than 25% of the state's population of people who experience homelessness. A recent special report released by the UCSF Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative on Black Californians' experiences homelessness highlights the systemic racism. Kara Young Ponder, PhD, director of community engagement and racial justice at the UCSF Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative, said, "California is one million units short of affordable and available housing for extremely low-income renters, of which Black Californians are over represented."

Black Californians are nearly four times more likely than White Californians to experience homelessness. This webinar is about the causes and consequences of homelessness for Black Californians. Kara Young Ponder, PhD, Tiana Moore, PhD, Lived Expertise Advisory Board Members Sage Johnson and Robynne Rose-Haymer, and National Alliance to End Homelessness VP of Research and Evidence Joy Moses discussed findings from the California Statewide Study of People Experiencing Homelessness (CASPEH), highlighted key policy recommendations, and answered audience questions.

To better understand the experiences of Black Californians experiencing homelessness, the UCSF Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative examined the experience of Black Californians within the California Statewide Study of People Experiencing Homelessness (CASPEH), the largest representative study of homelessness since the mid-1990s. This report reviews who experiences homelessness in the Black community, what may have precipitated their homelessness, experiences during their episode of homelessness, and what impacts their return to permanent housing. These findings aim to inform evidence-based solutions for preventing and ending homelessness for Black Californians.

The University of California, San Francisco Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative (BHHI) today released a special report on Black Californians’ experiences of homelessness. The report explores who in the Black community experiences homelessness, how they lost their housing, their experiences while homeless, and the barriers they face to regaining housing. The goal of the report is to inform evidence-based solutions for preventing and ending homelessness for Black Californians.

Hosted by the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence (the Partnership), lead researcher Anita Hargrave, MD, BHHI Policy Director Tiana Moore, PhD, and CPEDV staff dove deeper into policy recommendations and solutions that arose from the California Statewide Study of People Experiencing Homelessness (CASPEH) findings on the intersection of intimate partner violence and homelessness. The webinar featured an in-depth discussion of local and state opportunities, as well as funding and programmatic policy recommendations for advocates, policymakers, and other decision-makers.

A special report on the relationship between intimate partner violence and homelessness in California by the UCSF Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative, found that 1 in 5 women who become homeless in California flee their homes to escape violence. Participants described the need to plan their exit in advance and to accumulate resource; however, of those who experienced intimate partner violence in the 6 months prior to homelessness, only 12% sought help from a domestic violence organization. Margot Kushel, MD, director of the UCSF Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative, said, "Some people honestly had no idea what is a domestic violence shelter. Other people told us when they had to run, they had to run. They didn’t have time to figure out where to find a shelter."

A special report, released by UCSF Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative, explored the relationship between intimate partner violence (IPV) and homelessness in California. Findings from the report showed how violence and economic insecurity can be intertwined. Margot Kushel, MD, director of the UCSF Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative, said, "There are only so many places you can hide when you’re unsheltered."

To better understand the experiences of survivors of intimate partner violence currently experiencing homelessness, this report analyzed data related to IPV in the California Statewide Study of People Experiencing Homelessness (CASPEH)—the largest representative study of homelessness since the mid-1990s. The mixed-methods study included data about participants’ experiences of violence across the life course, in the six months prior to homelessness, and during their current episode of homelessness. The report presents these findings to advance evidence-based solutions for preventing and responding to homelessness among survivors of IPV. 

SAN FRANCISCO – The University of California, San Francisco Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative (BHHI) today released a special report on the relationship between intimate partner violence (IPV) and homelessness in California. The analysis is based on survey data and in-depth interviews from the California Statewide Study of People Experiencing Homelessness (CASPEH), the largest representative study of homelessness in the United States since the mid-1990s.

A growing number of people with lived experience of homelessness are finding opportunities in California to influence academic projects. More entities are beginning to create entire boards or councils of people who know what it is like to lose their housing. With regards to including a lived expertise advisory board in UCSF BHHI's California Statewide Study of People Experiencing Homelessness, Kara Young Ponder, PhD, director of community engagement and racial justice at the UCSF Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative, said, "The researchers had missed an entire world of economic insecurity, and the survey was much richer because the board members could see things the researchers could not."

The perception of people experiencing homelessness is often based on anecdote. On this episode of UCLA Housing Voice podcast, Margot Kushel, MD, director of the UCSF Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative, joins host Shane Phillips to talk about the California Statewide Study of People Experiencing Homelessness, and what it says about who experiences homelessness, why they become homeless, their experiences while living without housing, and barriers to re-entering stable housing. As the conversation moved to mental health, substance use disorder, and people experiencing homelessness, Dr. Kushel said, "People in those in depth interviews, talk to us really clearly, that while they might have been using these drugs before they became homeless, they're using them while homeless was a coping strategy."

Half of people experiencing homelessness are older than 50, and almost half of older homeless adults became homeless for the first time after they turned 50. This webinar is about the causes and consequences of homelessness in late life. Margot Kushel, MD, and other BHHI presenters will discuss findings from the Health Outcomes of People Experiencing Homelessness in Older Middle Age (HOPE HOME) project—a longitudinal cohort study following older adults experiencing homelessness in Oakland, CA, and the California Statewide Study of People Experiencing Homelessness (CASPEH)—the largest representative study of homelessness in the United States since the mid-1990s.

People experiencing homelessness are at an increased danger of dying. A recent study by the National Bureau of Economic Research showed a 40-year-old person experiencing homelessness has a similar risk of death as a 60-year-old person with housing. Previous studies have also found that people who experience homelessness have a greater mortality risk. Margot Kushel, MD, director of the UCSF Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative, said, "We’re letting people die because we’re not fixing the underlying crisis."

This paper describes the qualitative component of a large mixed method study, the California Statewide Study of People Experiencing Homelessness. The qualitative study consisted of seven sub-studies across eight counties, each exploring different dimensions of homelessness. BHHI researchers recruited participants from the overall sample, a statewide representative sample of adults experiencing homelessness recruited in eight counties, based on their responses to questions from the survey interviews. The researchers' mereological study design presents an approach for developing complex qualitative policy studies across a range of topic areas.
