Contingency Management for Smoking Cessation Among Adults Experiencing Homelessness

More than 70% of people experiencing homelessness report currently smoking, highlighting the need for effective ways to support people who want to quit. Contingency management (CM), a program that offers financial rewards for not smoking, has shown short-term promise, but longer-term CM programs have not been well-studied among people experiencing homelessness.

To help address this gap, researchers tested a 6-month CM program among adults experiencing homelessness who wanted to quit smoking. The study found that participants who received financial rewards had higher odds of not smoking than those in the control group.

These findings suggest that extended CM may be a promising strategy for supporting smoking cessation in this population, but larger trials are needed to confirm efficacy.
