Berty Arreguin

Berty Arreguin, PhD

Overview

Berty is a Mexican-American scholar, a first-generation college graduate, and the first in her family to earn a doctoral degree. Born and raised in Fresno, California—a community deeply affected by persistent health inequities; including many of her own family—she was inspired early on to pursue meaningful change through scholarship. This commitment led her to complete a PhD in Medical Sociology at UCSF.

Her research centers on understanding how social, emotional, and structural forces intersect to shape health outcomes and healthcare experiences, particularly among racially and socioeconomically diverse populations living with diabetes. Drawing on both quantitative and qualitative methodologies, Berty brings a nuanced, human-centered lens to complex health disparities.

Driven by a deep commitment to equity, she is dedicated to advancing research that uplifts marginalized communities and promotes more just and inclusive healthcare systems. Outside of her academic work, Berty finds joy in hiking, taking spontaneous road trips, and staying closely connected with friends and family across California.
